Periodic Inspection
By law, personal fall protection equipment must undergo periodic inspection within 12 months of the date of first use, or within 12 months of the date of the last periodic inspection. This inspection must be carried out by a competent person and documented in the product's service record.
Exceptional Inspection
An exceptional inspection is an extraordinary safety check carried out when there is reason to suspect that equipment may have been damaged or degraded. It is performed in addition to the periodic inspection, and must be carried out whenever an event has occurred that may have affected the safety of the equipment, or if the user raises concerns about the equipment's condition.
Examples of situations where an exceptional inspection may be necessary include: a fall, overloading, cuts, abrasion or exposure to chemicals.
Pre-Use Check
A pre-use check is a basic safety check carried out by the user before and after use. The purpose is to ensure that the equipment is intact and clean, functioning correctly and free from defects. Information on how to carry out the check is provided in the manufacturer's instructions for use.
Inspection: In accordance with EN 365, equipment must be checked before each use. Many manufacturers also state in their instructions for use that a visual check should be performed during and after use as well. In practice, this becomes a requirement since AFS 2023:11 requires compliance with the manufacturer's instructions for use. Function: Ensure that there is no damage and that the equipment is not impaired in any way. Cleanliness: Ensure that the equipment is clean and stored correctly, for example in a dry and dark location. Instructions for Use: Always follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding care and maintenance, use, etc.
