The anchorage is the part of the system that transfers the load to a load-bearing structure.
It may be:
- an anchor point,
- an anchor device,
- a load-bearing structure that may be used in accordance with the instructions for the coupled equipment.
An anchorage therefore does not always have to be a product conforming to EN 795 or EN 17235.
Which requirement applies?
Start with the equipment that will be coupled to the anchorage.
Instructions for the coupling → anchorage requirement → the requirement must be verifiable.
It is not enough for a point simply to appear strong or to have been used as an anchorage before.
EN 795
EN 795 covers anchor devices and divides them into:
- Type A – stationary anchor point requiring attachment to the structure,
- Type B – temporary or removable anchor device,
- Type C – horizontal flexible anchor line,
- Type D – horizontal rigid anchor line,
- Type E – anchor device relying on mass and friction.
For anchor devices intended for several simultaneous users, CEN/TS 16415 applies.
Permanent anchor devices – EN 17235:2024
EN 17235:2024 covers permanent anchor devices and safety hooks permanently fixed on or into buildings and civil engineering works.
The standard covers:
- Kit A – single anchor device,
- Kit B – safety hook,
- Kit C – horizontal wire anchor line,
- Kit D – horizontal rail anchor line.
An existing EN 795 system does not automatically become an EN 17235 system.
Installed systems
For an installed system, more than the product itself needs to be correct:
SELECT → INSTALL → DOCUMENT → MARK → USE → INSPECT
A system sign provides important information but does not by itself prove that the installation is correct or that the system remains safe to use.
Remember
The anchor device, installation, load-bearing structure and documentation must together provide a verifiable safe solution.
