When the risk assessment shows that personal fall protection is required, the next question is not which product to buy.
First determine what function the system must provide.
Personal fall protection systems may have different functions:
Restraint system
Prevents the user from reaching an area where a fall could occur.
Work positioning system
Supports the user in a defined working position while preventing a free fall.
Fall arrest system
Used where a free fall can occur and the system must catch, decelerate and stop the fall.
Rope access system
Used for access and work using ropes. Rope access is a specialised working method requiring specific competence, organisation, equipment and rescue preparedness.
Rescue system
Used to secure and move a person to a safe place during a rescue situation.
System function first – products afterwards
Once the correct system function has been determined, the components of the system can be selected.
A personal fall protection system can be described in simplified form as:
ANCHORAGE → HARNESS → CONNECTION
The products and EN standards required depend on the system function and how the work is to be performed.
Hewall Safety Hub therefore uses consistent product terminology and relevant EN standards so that you can recognise the same categories when moving on to Products.
One product may be used in several systems
The same product category may occur in several different system functions.
A full body harness according to EN 361, for example, identifies a type of harness but does not by itself determine how the complete fall protection system is intended to function.
Likewise, a connector according to EN 362 may be used in several different systems.
It is therefore the system function, the intended use of the components and the manufacturer's instructions together that determine how the system can be assembled.
Remember
When you have identified which system function is required, continue to Chapter 3 – Personal fall protection systems. There, the different systems are explained together with the product categories and EN standards relevant to each system.
