The applicable provisions depend on the task, workplace and way in which the work is carried out.
Some of the most important provisions are:
AFS 2023:1 – Systematic work environment management
Contains the fundamental requirements for how employers organise, carry out and follow up work environment management.
It includes requirements concerning:
- employee knowledge,
- examination of the working environment,
- risk assessment,
- measures and follow-up.
AFS 2023:2 – Planning and organisation of work environment management
Includes requirements concerning preparedness and procedures for first aid and crisis support.
The level of preparedness must reflect the nature, scale and particular risks of the work.
AFS 2023:3 – Planning, design and coordination of the work environment in construction projects
Applies to planning, design and coordination of construction and civil engineering work.
It is particularly relevant where fall risks can be prevented through the way a building, structure or workplace is planned and designed.
AFS 2023:10 – Risks in the working environment
Contains the general provisions concerning fall risks.
When examining and assessing the working environment, the employer must specifically consider the risk of injury from falls.
AFS 2023:11 – Work equipment and personal protective equipment – safe use
Regulates, among other things, the selection and use of personal protective equipment.
It includes requirements concerning:
- selection and fitting of personal protective equipment,
- use in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions,
- information and training,
- maintenance,
- ladders, scaffolding and other work equipment.
AFS 2023:12 – Workplace design
Contains requirements concerning workplace design, including measures to minimise fall risks.
It also contains the specific requirement that a fixed ladder higher than 6 metres must have protection that prevents falls.
AFS 2023:13 – Risks associated with certain types of work
Contains specific requirements for work including:
- construction and civil engineering,
- mast and pole work,
- snow clearance from roofs.
AFS 2023:15 – Medical examinations in working life
Includes requirements for medical examinations with an assessment for a certificate of fitness for certain types of climbing involving a large difference in level.
