A restraint system is used to prevent the user from reaching an area where a fall could occur.
The system must therefore restrict the user's movement so that the person cannot reach, for example:
- an unprotected roof edge,
- an opening,
- a shaft,
- another area where a fall to a lower level could occur.
The system must restrain – not arrest
A restraint system is not intended to stop a free fall.
For the system to function as restraint, its length and position must ensure that the user cannot reach the fall hazard area.
If the user can reach the edge, the system no longer functions as a restraint system.
Products and standards
Depending on the solution, a restraint system may include, for example:
Anchorage An anchorage point, anchorage device or structure that meets the requirements for the selected connection.
Harness For example, a full body harness – EN 361, work positioning belt – EN 358, or another harness intended for the relevant use.
Coupling For example:
- lanyard – EN 354,
- work positioning lanyard – EN 358,
- connector – EN 362.
Which products may be combined is determined by the manufacturer's instructions for each product.
Important
If the system allows the user to reach an area where a free fall can occur, the solution must be reassessed.
A different system function, such as a fall arrest system, may then be required.
Remember
If the user can reach the edge, the system no longer functions as a restraint system.
