When personal fall protection is used, several types of information must be considered together.
The Swedish Work Environment Act
Primarily addresses fundamental duties and responsibilities for the working environment.
Swedish Work Environment Authority provisions – AFS
Provide more detailed requirements for how the working environment must be planned and for particular risks, workplaces and forms of work.
Manufacturer's instructions
Govern how the actual product may be used.
They may contain information concerning:
- intended use,
- permitted and prohibited uses,
- compatible components,
- anchorage requirements,
- direction of use,
- clearance,
- use over an edge,
- inspection and maintenance,
- service life and retirement criteria.
When the question concerns the actual product, the manufacturer's instructions cannot be replaced by generic advice.
EN standards
EN standards are used, among other things, to define and test products and systems against specified technical requirements.
The standard helps identify what type of product or system it is and the function for which it is intended.
Examples:
- full body harness – EN 361,
- work positioning lanyard – EN 358,
- energy absorber – EN 355,
- retractable type fall arrester – EN 360,
- connector – EN 362,
- guided type fall arrester including a rigid anchor line – EN 353-1,
- guided type fall arrester including a flexible anchor line – EN 353-2.
The standard number alone, however, does not determine whether a product is suitable for a particular task.
That is determined by the task, the risk assessment and the manufacturer's instructions together.
Remember
The EN standard helps you find the correct product category. The manufacturer's instructions tell you how the actual product may be used.
