A work positioning system is used to support the user in a defined working position.
The system is normally loaded during the work and allows the user to work while supported by the system, while preventing a free fall.
Work positioning is used, for example, where the user needs to lean or be supported by the system in order to work with both hands.
Work positioning is not the same as fall arrest
A work positioning system must prevent a free fall from occurring.
If there is still a risk that the user could fall to a lower level, the work positioning system must be supplemented by another suitable fall protection system.
It is therefore important to distinguish between:
- support and positioning, and
- protection against a possible free fall.
Products and standards
Depending on the work, a work positioning system may include, for example:
Anchorage An anchorage point, anchorage device or structure that meets the requirements for the selected connection.
Harness For example:
- work positioning belt – EN 358,
- full body harness – EN 361 with a work positioning function,
- sit harness – EN 813, where intended for the relevant working method.
Coupling For example:
- work positioning lanyard – EN 358,
- connector – EN 362.
The permitted attachment points and combinations are defined by the product markings and manufacturer's instructions.
Important
An attachment point on a harness is not automatically intended for fall arrest.
Different attachment points may have different functions.
Always use the attachment point intended for the relevant system function in accordance with the harness markings and manufacturer's instructions.
Remember
Work positioning provides support and prevents a free fall – but it does not automatically replace a fall arrest system where a fall to a lower level may still occur.
