A plan is not complete simply because fall protection equipment has been selected.
Before work begins, verify that the planned solution will actually work under the real conditions.
Check, among other things:
- that the task and workplace still correspond to the risk assessment,
- that the planned protective measures are in place and effective,
- that the selected personal fall protection has the correct function for the task,
- that the products can be used in accordance with their manufacturer's instructions,
- that the components are permitted to be used together,
- that the anchorage meets the requirements for the selected connection,
- that the user can work and move as planned,
- that relevant risks such as clearance, swing falls and direction of use have been assessed,
- that the equipment has been checked and is safe to use,
- that those performing the work have the necessary knowledge and information,
- that rescue can be carried out if the person cannot reach a safe place without assistance.
Rescue must be feasible before work begins
If a foreseeable fall, injury or other event could leave a person suspended or unable to reach a safe place without assistance, there must be a workable plan for rescuing that person.
It is not enough simply to have rescue equipment available.
It must also be clear that the equipment can be used at the actual location, by the people available and under the conditions that apply.
Rescue is covered in detail in Chapter 5.
Remember
Do not only check that the equipment is available. Verify that the complete solution works for the actual task.
